Join Us as a Volunteer!Located in Johnsonville (Wellington), our vibrant community at KCA eagerly welcomes new volunteers like you.

Shift times: Sunday mornings, departing from our Johnsonville warehouse at 8:30am sharp and returning at approximately 11:30am.
Kiwi Community Assistance (KCA) is looking for caring and community-minded volunteers to join our Sunday Food Rescue team. This role combines driving, food sorting, and basic administration tasks, helping us rescue quality food that would otherwise go to waste and redistribute it to people who need it most.
Volunteers in this role generally assist once a month on Sundays, but are more than welcome to volunteer more frequently. To ensure everyone feels confident and supported, new volunteers are asked to complete two consecutive training shifts before moving into a regular monthly roster.
As part of our Food Rescue team, volunteers work together to help collect and redistribute quality surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.
Responsibilities may include:
Driving our chiller truck (for volunteers applying for a driving role). Drivers must hold a full, clean driver's licence and will also assist with food sorting and packing duties.
Sorting and boxing donated food collected from local supermarkets and other food donors.
Checking 'use by' and 'best before' dates in accordance with our food safety procedures.
Weighing rescued food donations to help with our reporting and funding requirements.
Taking photographs while out on collections and deliveries and uploading them to Facebook (admin volunteer role).
Using your personal cellphone to check in at stores via the Woolworths Visitors App (minimal data usage), or manually checking in at customer service when required.
Working alongside fellow volunteers to help ensure food reaches community organisations efficiently and safely.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old to do the admin work or 25 years old to meet the requirements of our vehicle insurance policy.
A full, clean driver's licence if applying for a driving role.
Safe driving skills and a responsible approach to vehicle operation.
Good communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with volunteers, food donors, and recipient agencies.
A reasonable level of physical fitness, including the ability to lift up to 15kg individually or up to 20kg with assistance, and use a barrel trolley when required.
We ask volunteers to commit to one shift per month for a minimum of six months. This helps us provide a reliable food rescue service to the community and ensures the time invested in training and supporting volunteers is worthwhile.
By joining our Food Rescue team, you'll be helping reduce food waste while supporting local whānau and community organisations. Every shift makes a meaningful difference.
