Volunteer with Us

Based in Grenada North you will need to have your own vehicle to be able to get to us.  There is off street car parking outside our warehouse.

Please note: reliability and punctuality are key attributes that we require of our volunteers. Monday to Friday volunteers must be over the age of 14 and able to commit on a weekly basis for a minimum of 3 months.  You may be required to lift banana boxes or donations of weighing between 15-20kg between 2 people.

In the spirit of transparency, none of our volunteers are eligible or allowed to take any of the donated food or goods themselves.

KCA is big, KCA is fast, KCA is flexible.  Our volunteers work at our distribution hub helped over 140,000 residents in the Greater Wellington last financial year.   Our food rescue volunteers redistributed over 335,604kgs of food shared with local school, kindys, soup kitchens, refuges, foodbanks, community groups and families self isolating working with our partner agencies.

Our non-food operation volunteers worked at our warehouse last year and successfully made up over 4,800 banana boxes full of stock.

The role that you could play at KCA is very valuable and our sponsors require all KCA volunteers to be fully vaccinated and up to date with their booster shots.

Our team of 63 volunteers would really like to have a few pairs of additional hands to join our teams.

During your interview you will need to let us know if you are available to work during all levels of Covid or when you won't be able to come in to assist us if you have holidays booked.

We have a wide range of voluntary roles on our food program which we would love to fill asap.  Please feel free to pick 1 day and time slot that would work for you.  Our volunteers are all working in set bubbles.

Monday, Wednesday or Friday Food Rescue Admin Team Member in Chiller Truck

Start and finish in Grenada North, Pick which day, weekly from 8am to 11.30am immediate start

Once you have arrived at our warehouse, our store or general manager will go through with you the manifest for the day.   All team members are issued with a face mask, KCA branded high vis, their own bottle of hand sanitiser, food safety gloves as you will be in the confined space of a truck cab getting to the different supermarkets.

1 on 1 training is provided and there is also a manual that you can refer to.

Working closely with the volunteer driver you will be required to sort and box donated food from local supermarkets ensuring that you check the 'use by' and the 'best before' dates before placing it into banana boxes.  All donated food is also weighed for reporting purposes.

You must be able to use a 'smart phone' to take photos and upload the photos on our Facebook page with narrations whilst in the chiller truck between supermarkets.

Good communication skills are required, as this team member liaises with the various partner agencies calling them from our chiller truck to arrange at time to collect the stock from our refrigeration equipment.    These partner agencies come from all over the Greater Wellington region, including Kapiti, Upper Hutt, and Wellington City.

This role involves heavy lifting (15-20kgs) between 2 people, so you must be reasonably fit. KCA provides a barrel trolley to wheel the stock to the chiller truck.

This role is a once a week commitment for a minimum of 3 months.
